Licensed, insured, and how soon we can come: what to expect when you hire Trailhead

The first two questions almost everyone asks us are "Are you licensed and insured?" and "When can you do it?" Here are both answers, with the numbers, so you can check them yourself.

Licensed

  • Washington contractor registration TRAILTS796RC Trailhead Tree Service, LLC. Washington requires tree services to register with the Department of Labor & Industries, carry a bond, and carry liability insurance. Verify us at lni.wa.gov →
  • City of Spokane Commercial Tree Service License Required for tree work on City property and street trees. We hold it and we're on the City's certified arborist list. See the list →
  • Idaho General Contractor Registration 2271382 Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses. Verify at dopl.idaho.gov →
  • ISA Certified Arborists on staff Adam DeWitt (sales manager) is an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist, ISA's highest certification. Ryan Schulte (owner) is an ISA Certified Arborist. An arborist assesses every tree before the crew touches it. Certificate numbers on request; verify at isa-arbor.com →
  • Wildfire risk reduction qualified Defensible-space pruning done to the standard.
  • USDOT 3899700 Four power units, authority since June 2022. The trucks are registered too.

Insured and bonded

General liability insurance and a surety bond on file with L&I. We will email a certificate of insurance before the job. Just ask. If a limb ever hits your roof, this is whose policy pays, and it should never be yours.

Bonded vs. insured. The bond is a fund you can claim against if a contractor fails to perform or pay. Insurance pays if something gets damaged or someone gets hurt. A tree service needs both. Ask any company for both numbers; it takes ten seconds to check.

When we can do it

  • Estimates: an arborist comes out to look in a few days, and you get a written quote.
  • Work: typically a few weeks out, depending on the season. Spring and fall book fastest. That backlog is a good sign. We would rather tell you the truth than promise Tuesday.
  • Emergency response is our priority. A tree on a structure or a hanging limb over a walkway moves to the front of the line, and we are already working on the weekend. What to do tonight →

What happens on the estimate visit

  1. Ryan or Adam walks the property with you: the tree, what is under it, how we would get equipment to it (our 72-ft lift fits through a 36-inch gate).
  2. Photographs the tree and tells you honestly: prune, cable, or remove. If it can be saved, we say so.
  3. Writes the quote. Every quote includes the arborist's assessment, a licensed and insured crew, all rigging and lift work, and cleanup and haul-off.

What does bonded mean for a tree service?

Washington requires registered contractors to post a surety bond with Labor & Industries. It is a fund a customer can claim against if the contractor fails to perform or pay. Bonded is not the same as insured; a tree service needs both, and Trailhead carries both.
